Sustainable Furniture Design: Our Responsibility

May 20, 2025 · 7 min read

At SORO we believe that beautiful objects should also be responsible objects. Furniture that is built to last is, by definition, sustainable — it won't end up in landfill after five years.

Material Sourcing

All our wood is sourced from FSC-certified suppliers. Our primary hardwoods — oak, walnut and ash — come from sustainably managed forests in Eastern Europe and Turkey. We do not use MDF or particleboard in structural applications. Solid wood only.

Metal Recycling

Stainless steel is one of the most recyclable materials on earth — at end of life, it can be recycled with virtually no loss of quality. Our workshop's metal offcuts are sold to recycling partners, not discarded.

Packaging

We have eliminated single-use plastic from our packaging entirely. Pieces are wrapped in recycled cotton blankets and packed in timber crates that are designed to be repurposed or recycled by the client.

Our 2027 Goals

By 2027 we aim to achieve carbon-neutral production across our Istanbul atelier, primarily through solar panel installation and offset programmes. We are also piloting a furniture take-back scheme for long-standing clients — old SORO pieces refurbished and returned to circulation rather than discarded.
