5 Things to Consider When Choosing a Coffee Table

May 5, 2025 · 4 min read

The coffee table anchors the living room. Yet it is often the most overlooked furniture purchase — chosen hastily, too small, wrong material, wrong height. Here is a short guide to making the right decision.

1. Scale Relative to the Sofa

The coffee table should be approximately two-thirds the length of the sofa it faces. Too short and the room feels unbalanced; too long and circulation around it becomes difficult. Height should sit 2–5 cm below the sofa seat cushion.

2. Material and the Room's Palette

A wood table reads warm; a metal-glass table reads cool. Neither is better — but the choice must align with the room's dominant palette and the weight of other pieces already in the space.

3. Practical Functionality

Consider how you actually live. Do you eat in front of the television? You need a table with a solid surface that is easy to clean. Do you have young children? Avoid glass tops and sharp corners. Do you host frequently? Storage inside the table might be valuable.

4. Shape and Flow

Rectangular tables maximise surface area; round tables improve traffic flow in smaller rooms. An oval table offers a compromise. In open-plan spaces, a distinctive shape — an asymmetric sculptural piece — can do the work of a room divider.

5. Longevity of Choice

A coffee table is not something you should replace every few years. Choose a design that is quiet enough to outlast trends — something that will still look right when the sofa, the rug and the cushions have all changed around it.
